York offers a fine blend of sporting action set in some of the most scenic surroundings, complemented by modern facilities, the most notable being the award-winning Knavesmire Stand.
Organised racing was first introduced to the York area by the Romans, with the first meeting on the famous Knavesmire taking place in 1731, and the first grandstand completed in 1754. Today York hosts several of Britain's most prestigious races, including the Tote-Ebor Festival which takes place over three days in August.
Highlights of the York racing calendar include the May meeting, the Tote Ebor Festival in August and York's Sunday meeting in September.
By Car: York racecourse is just outside the city of York with good motorway links on the M1 and A1. Once near the city, from the south, east and west the A64 and A1036 are the roads to follow. From the north, use the A19 and A59, then the York Ring Road to avoid the city centre.
By Train: York Station on the main east coast line is a mile from the course. London Kings Cross is just 1 hr 50 minutes away, with Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham also direct. Regular buses link with the track.
By Air: Light aircraft can land at nearby Rufforth, 6 miles away. Helicopters access to the course are permitted by prior arrangement. Leeds/Bradford and Manchester airports are between 60 and 90 minutes away.
